O Velho Ernesto do Mar | Old Ernest of the sea

Já não é possível contar as horas de mar do Velho Ernesto do Mar. Começou gaiato na faina da pesca e foi desde cedo que o sobrenome “do Mar” se lhe colou ao nome, como a neblina marítima se nos cola à pele.

O Ernesto do Mar cresceu e fez do mar a sua vida. De gaiato, passou a arrais, chegou a mestre e por fim capitão. Navegou milhas sem fim, até que o cabelo se lhe tornou grisalho, e logo a seguir a barba também. Passaram então a chamar-lhe O Velho Ernesto do Mar e ele, com o pragmatismo característico dos homens do mar, entendeu que estava por fim, na hora de ir tomar conta dos netos, vê-los crescer e abraçá-los sempre que lhe desse vontade de tal, ao invés de esperar dias a fio para o fazer.

O Velho Ernesto do Mar é hoje um velho feliz, que quando não está no cais a contemplar o mar, está rodeado dos netos, a ensinar-lhe a sentir o mar e o vento, a mergulhar com eles os pés na água fria, ou a enfiar-lhes cordas nas mãos, para fazerem mais este ou aquele nó. Ele costuma dizer a rir, que no meio de tantos miúdos, algum tomará a paixão pelo mar.

 

It is not possible to count all the hours at sea of Ernest of the Sea. He started early age at fishing work, and it was early on that the surname “of the sea” got stuck to his name, as the sea fog stucks to our skin.

Ernest of the Sea grew and made the sea his life. From just a taskboy, he became skiper, master and captain at last. He sailed endless miles, until his hair became grey and right after his beard too. And all the other sea man started to call him Old Ernest of The Sea. He then finally realized it was time to settle down, and watch for his grandchildren, to see them grow and hug them whenever he wanted to.

Old Ernest of The Sea, is now a happy old man. When he is not at the pear looking at his beloved sea, he is surrounded of kids, teaching them to feel the sea and the wind, and stucking their feet in the col water, or putting some ropes in their hands so they do this knot or some other one. He says laughing, that as they are so many, at least one should inherit his passion for the sea.
