Novos guerreiros | New warriors
It is on the longest day of the year that the
tribe's youngest warriors finally join the ranks of those who defend their
territory against the white man's greed. It is also at this moment that they
receive their weapons and are recognized as adults by the entire tribe.
The ceremony begins at day's end, as the sun still
resists the moon's arrival, casting its final golden rays across the land, clinging,
as it were, to something to avoid being driven to the other side of the world
by the approaching moon and the darkness it brings.
The young warriors present the shields they have
crafted and decorated themselves to the tribe, so that all may recognize them.
Their weapons are given to them by the elder warriors, who have assessed each
youth's mastery during months of training and assign the weapon best suited to
the individual and the tribe's needs. It can be an axe, a knife, a spear, a bow and arrows, or
a blowpipe.
The ceremony opens with prayers and offerings to the Great Spirit, asking for protection for these new warriors, and continues through the night with songs and dances to give thanks and ask the Great Spirit to ensure the tribe's enduring prosperity.
